Stages in Preparation for Architecture

Once you decide which direction your life should take, the infinite seems to be laying ahead of you. Walk with no fear - you are not alone. You will always find the greatest support within youself, in your own resources and motivation. Apart from that, everything that surrounds you will stay by your side while you are going in the right way. A strong and positive person will be always appreciated for his or her abilities, achievements and personality. However, you should not look for appreciation, but for the chance of constant improvement. Perfectioning yourself is a neverending road.

Someone that has a genuine wish for becoming an architect and proves a true dedication and wish to work for his or her ideal should never be discouraged, no matter what the exterior circumstances are. No external support could make up for someone's personal dedication. Our supreme motivation should be the chance to improve ourselves by working on our own, not the fear that we would not live up to the others' expectations: this can never determine ourselves genuinely. The greatest motivation in life is love for what you you could achieve, not the fear of failure. There's no chance to fail, unless you take this negative chance into consideration. A truly determined person will be able to achieve anything.

Architecture - imagination and will
The experience in the architectural field starts from an early age, by percieving the shapes and space that surrounds us and by feeling inspired to recreate it, may it be in a drawing, in a 3D model, or even in reality, redecorating a room. So, what architecture requires firstly is creativity and good spacial perception. We cannot pronounce on someone's talent judging by the first attempts: the real talent shows up in time, according to the dedication of the person. What we can notice at a certain moment is the level of skill, and this develops in time, while gaining more knowledge and experience.

Little is known about how a future architect should prepare before entering university. The usual school subjects provide hardly any support in this field, so the preparation should be done individually or with the help of an architecture professor. Most of the future students take private lessons before the exam, but it would be best if those were anticipated by individual learning. There are countless educational resources nowadays, but most of us are not aware of this fact, or lack interest.

Everyone that really wishes to excell in their chosen field should realise that every lack of interest and motivation is at the expense of his or her own knowledge and chances. Once you really want to achieve something, to become a better person, there is nothing more important than the path you chose. Following your path is the key to achieving your wish.

Exam requirments
You should make an efficient study plan, according to the time you have until entering the university. An early decision would of course be in your advantage, but the only aspect which is truly relevant is your dedication: some of the future students decide for architecture in the 12th grade and succeed in entering the university with flying colours. In general, the candidates for architecture universities need to prove their creativity, technical knowledge and drawing skills. The accent is put on the accuracy of the drawing, which should be technically correct, and less on the artistic side, even if the layout of the page is also taken into consideration. The exam subjects relate to:
  • technical drawing (descriptive geometry, axonometry)
  • perspective drawing (usually, an architectural composition)
  • famous architectural objectives (sketching buildings from memory)
  • general knowledge in the field of architecture.
  • spacial perception, drawing skills, etc.
You can study all those by yourself, if you have good preparation materials and know what to focus on. A broad experience and specific knowledge gained in time will not only be extremely useful for the exam, but it will considerably help you in any other aspects of your life, as well as in the university.

1. History of art and architecture

It is of vital importance to gain knowledge from the past. There are countless architectural masterpieces that are worth studying and taking as inspiration. Architecture is a fascinating field, dating back to the first traces of human civilization. Everyone that wishes to take it further should know its development, its characteristics during different historical periods. A comprehensive knowledge of history of architecture allows you to understand the architectural phenomenon, how different styles are adapted to the states of society, and you will be able to create your own style in accordance to the present requirements and technology. Also, focus on esthetics and try to define the ideal of beauty in architectural works. The study of architecture should be always connected to the context - general history, the history of arts and philosophy will also take part in your preparation.

There are countless online resources on this topic: Wikipedia, university courses in pdf, online encyclopedias, articles, etc. You can also check the libraries or book stores for study materials. Knowledge comes handy and it only waits for your interest to arrive!

2. Fundamental notions in architecture

Learn about different architectural styles and their characteristics, the components of a building and how to integrate them harmoniously, etc. There are many architectural guides to introduce you in the field, as well as online resources.

3. Artistic Drawing - Sketching

Sketching is very important in an architect's work. The exam also requires good sketching skills. Whenever you study a building you like, sketch it! It will help you to remember it better and you will also make a nice drawing portofolio.

There can be found many drawing tutorials on YouTube, from which you can learn sketching tips and drawing techniques.

4. Technical Drawing - Descriptive Geometry and Perspective Drawing

This is considered to be the most challenging part, but if you study properly and pay attention to the exercises, you won't encounter any difficulties. Here are some suggestions of descriptive geometry courses:
